This panel will explore the cultural history of the nonhuman
in the long nineteenth century. The panel chairs invite papers that unpack historical ideas
of the nonhuman or of the species barrier, especially in relation to
disciplinary divisions in the arts and sciences occurring over the course of
the nineteenth century. Proposals might focus on canonical cultural documents
or more scientific forms like lectures, natural histories, anthropological
studies, and so on.
